North Wiltshire District Council and its partners are proposing the redevelopment of Phelps Parade and adjacent land providing the opportunity to bring forward a high quality mixed use scheme fronting The Pippin.

The plans are phase 3 of the redevelopment of Calne and would revitalise the town centre with a new Woolworth store, further shops, new homes, and a Public Square.

I think this new development
I think this new development is long overdue and very welcome. But surely we could do better than a Woolworths store?! I agree that is misses the point. There are some lovely parts of Calne and Phelps parade should make people want to see more. Surely if a lot of money is being spent on this, it should be spent wisely.

I completely agree with the first comment. The proposed development appears to have missed the point of truly showing what a beautiful place Calne is. A huge Woolworths? Really? This town is full of history, life and beauty, why not try to reflect that in a redesign of the town centre that desperately needs an uplift to show its class and character.

I think that the proposed development of Calne is a missed opportunity to make Calne great. Whilst any improvement would be widely welcomed it seems that the new plan is simply replacing an old blot on the landscape with a newer one! It is unimaginative in design and overly dominant on the beautiful, historic Zion chapel. We need to celebrate our market towns history and encourage developments more akin to the beautiful Church Street with it's traditional feel and signage (not a glowing neon sign in sight!!!). A new centre of Calne is needed with more restaurants etc and additional independent retailers of a more upmarket nature. I do not agree that Sainsburys or Woolworths should be the focal point of our town, we are killing it. Why not take a leaf out of other market towns like Corsham? The new proposed development of Castlefields park is wonderful and will be great for both residents and visitors. It would be even better if a modern play park could be incorporated in the lower part of the park (by the trim trail) in an area fenced off from dogs. A top rate example of how this can be done can be seen in Wootton Bassett by the lake. Maybe we can help inject a bit more pride in our town in the young people of Calne. We have one of the top 50 Independent Schools in the country in Calne and lots of money coming to the area because of it (and Bowood House), so lets inspire tham to stay a while and spend some of it here! Events such as the Arts Festival, The Duck Race, Teddy Bears Picnic, Lantern Parade, Motorbike Ralley etc all help to build a sense of community and an energetic vibe in our town. Let's keep it up and not lie down in the shaddow of Chippenham.
