Many people have chosen Calne as their home, recognising the quality of life and benefits of living in a small market town surrounded by accesible countryside and historic landmarks.
The town offers new residents a slower pace of life and a sense of community, where people know your name and where you can enjoy the facilities and opportunities the town has to offer.
The town has something for everyone. Those interested in history can explore the rich past of this ancient settlement and discover the highs and lows the town has experienced over the centuries. The Heritage Centre on The Strand can offer the ideal starting point, and the heritage trail will take you on a walking tour of some of our remaining historic buildings.
The surrounding countryside is a big attraction for residents. The town benefits from being part of the National Cycle Network and there are routes through spectacular countryside that are free and easy to access. The town also benefits from many open green spaces, from the fabulous Castle Park, which is the gateway to the cycle network, to the more formal "Green" which is surrounded by some of our most beautiful architecture. There are also many well equipped modern parks and play areas offering fun equipment for children and young people, located in convenient areas around the town.
Families are attracted to the town as there are excellent facilities for children. There are 5 state primary schools and an excellent secondary school & language college, The John Bentley School. The town also has a special educational school with Sports College status, Springfield School and two independent schools - St Marys School & St Margarets Preparatory School. There is also a branch of Wiltshire College offering courses located on The Green.
